General Physics I, Phy 111 (Kapp)……………………..4 cr hr

The topics of mechanics, fluids, wave motion, and heat are presented using the tools of algebra and trigonometry to pre-professional and liberal arts students. Physics laboratory exercises supplement understanding of the topics covered. Physics 111 is the first half of a two semester sequence required by many college programs.

Prerequisite: Math 169, algebra.

Co-requisite: Math 177, trig.

Attendance

• Attendance is required.
• Students who do not attend one of the first two class sessions in the semester WILL be dropped from the class.
• In the event of excessive absence (or tardiness), and if the instructor has determined that as a result, the students quality of work has been adversely affected, the instructor may withdraw the student mid-way through the semester.
• Plus or minus 3% will be credited or deducted, proportionally, from the students final percentage based on attendance. Zero percent being correlated at an attendance level of 75%. Arriving late, or leaving early, will count as a missed class.

Exams

Exams are weighted 80% of the course. The target exam dates listed are to be used by the student to pace themselves. Actual dates for exams may vary slightly… They will be announced in class. All exams must be taken on the date the exam is given. Missed exams receive 0%.

Laboratory

Laboratory work is weighted as 20% of the course grade. Laboratory assignments will be announced and discussed in advance. Missed labs receive 0%.

Homework

Selected problems (most from the end of the chapter) will be assigned. The student is expected to attempt these problems on a timely basis. Attempt is defined as having spent real time and effort trying to find a solution, and if questioned by the instructor, the student should be able to discuss the problem and their attempt at solving it, or why it could not be solved.

Academic Dishonesty

The WCC board of trustees, policy on student conduct (4040), revised 2/22/83, section 10:

All forms of academic dishonesty, including cheating, fabrication, facilitating academic dishonesty, and plagiarism.

will be followed.

Students are expected to neither give nor receive help on exams. Students observing dishonest behavior are required to report the observation to their instructor.

Discussion among students concerning laboratory work and homework is encouraged although students are expected to turn in their own work.

In order to arrange support accommodations, it is recommended that I be informed by the student one week prior to the first exam, that you are registered, require support, and the specific details of that support.

90 to 92% A- 93 to 100% A

Example: Your exam average is 81%, your laboratory average is 88%, and your percent attendance is 90%

Your attendance bonus is: bonus% = (90-75)/100*12 = 1.8%

Your Course percent is: (0.8 * 81) + (0.2 * 88) = 82.4%

With the attendance bonus, your course percent is: 82.4% +1.8% = 84%

Your course grade will be: "B"

It is the Physical Science Departments general policy that:

a) The grade of incomplete will be given only when a student is unable, due to catastrophic circumstances, complete the last exam, AND, when that student has contracted with the instructor as to the details of how the exam will be completed.

b) Status change from credit and audit are not executed by the instructor. The student may elect this status change before the critical date.

c) Withdraws are executed by the student during the appropriate time period. They are not granted by your instructor.
