My favorite resources for online work

HTML editor

Dreamweaver
Macromedia
This editor lets you see the "code" or ignore it as needed. Plus....a remembering "undo" button that goes back 20 or so revisions. A REAL TIME SAVER!

image editor

Fireworks
Macromedia

Comes with Dreamweaver and lets the technically naive create simple images and edit them with ease. ANOTHER TIME SAVER!

text editor

Textpad
Helios

A real clean text editor program that doesn't pollute the coding like Notepad
search engines
search engines
(by word)

AltaVista
Northern Lights
HotBot

Search engines change daily and have a variety of resources to offer. You can never get along on just one. You need to pick the one most suited to your needs and cross check it with another that offers different features. Thus, you need to understand how to use the features by checking the "advanced" search options.

Most all search engines utilize the "directory" and "word" search methods. However, some, such as Alta Vista are powerful word search engines. Yahoo, on the other hand, is the granddaddy of all granddaddy's of directories. Still other entrants, such as AskJeeves, allow you to ask entire questions which will then channel you into large directories of information. Google is an engine that searches using links...a relatively new approach.

Then, there are the meta search engines such as AlltheWeb, Profusion, that bring you the best of all....at least what they have in common.

And...finally...there are search indexes, such as those found at Netscape.

Whereas each search engine/directory has something unique to offer, those listed on the left seem to be of superior quality and are used by a lot of web surfers. Remember, these search devices are available for free. You need to put up with the advertisements!!!

My favorite online tools for collaborative work

Asynchronous Forum WebBBS

This board, unlike any others I have found, allows students to choose how they wish to view messages. They can see the "flow" of the conversation in threads or they can see all messages at once. This is essential to academic collaborative work which asks students to analyze and synthesize class discussions.

This board lets users sign-up to receive e-mails of postings so I don't have to check it to see if there has been any activity.

Finally, this board allows me to "customize" it with graphics and messages. I can explain the assignment right in the board.

For an example, see my example at http://bmgfac.wccnet.org/users/stu_gracie/BMGXXX/forums/

It is available for about $57.00 for as many boards as you like!!!

Chat NetMeeting

This chat area allows students to share documents and edit them. Most chats only allow students to type conversations. (They could just as well use a phone in a conference call.) Furthermore, the editor is a text editor. Pretty nifty.

Best part is that the chat program is available for free from Microsoft. Only catch is that you have to run it on an NT server

Web Site BMGXXX No....that isn't a package. It's a web site I designed myself using my favorite online tools. Most packages don't organize the materials in a way that reflects the course. Check out my example at http://bmgfac.wccnet.org/BMGXXX/desktop.htm
Quiz Package QuizPlease This isn't really my favorite package but it is the only one that has been on the market in a price range we can afford. (About $149.00.) Coming fast as runner up is Cyberexam.
